WINDING ALLEY
This design is a proposed intergenerational day care center that is set in the middle of the Chinatown District of San Francisco. The design aims to move beyond simple co-location, fostering meaningful interaction, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging between these two age groups. A central design element is a winding walkway, intentionally slowing the pace and inviting occupants to engage with the diverse programs offered throughout the facility. This walkway acts as a unifying circulation spine, providing access to all program rooms while also serving as a platform that encourages spontaneous detours into these spaces. The design further incorporates a shared sunken courtyard, fostering direct interaction between the two age groups. Accessible directly from the public street, the pathway gracefully guides visitors and occupants through the centre, culminating at an existing playground that is shared with a neighbouring preschool. This seamless integration into the existing community fabric ensures that the new facility will be a natural and beneficial addition to the neighbourhood.
